What to Expect From a Brazilian Guide

Brazilian climbing guides are typically trained through the Brazilian Mountain Guides Association (AGME) or equivalent regional programs. Most speak some English — expect full conversation in Rio and Belo Horizonte, basic functional English in Serra do Cipo and Chapada Diamantina. Always confirm language capability when booking if communication in English is important to your experience.

Guides typically provide: route knowledge, anchor setup and breakdown, rope management on rappels, and emergency protocols. They do not typically carry rescue insurance on your behalf — ensure your own travel insurance covers mountain rescue before you go.

For Vidigal and Dois Irmaos specifically: the guide cooperative maintains a formal relationship with the Vidigal community that spans decades. Your guide handles introductions, knows the community checkpoints, and ensures the approach benefits the neighborhood. This is not a formality — it is the reason the route remains accessible to visiting climbers. Respect the protocol completely.

Tip culture: R$50–100 per person per day is appropriate and appreciated. Cash only, paid directly to the guide at the end of the day.
